John 16 - A Present Joy Beyond This World

“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. ⁵ But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ ⁶ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. ⁷ Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. ⁸ And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: ⁹ concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; ¹⁰ concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; ¹¹ concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

¹² “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.¹³ When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. ¹⁴ He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. ¹⁵ All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

Your Sorrow Will Turn into Joy

¹⁶ “A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me.” ¹⁷ So some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, ‘because I am going to the Father’?” ¹⁸ So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We do not know what he is talking about.” ¹⁹ Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? ²⁰ Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. ²¹ When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. ²² So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. ²³ In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. ²⁴ Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.

I Have Overcome the World

²⁵ “I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. ²⁶ In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; ²⁷ for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.^[a] 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

²⁹ His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech! ³⁰ Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God.” ³¹ Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? ³² Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. ³³ I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

John 15 - The Promise of Persecution

17 These things I command you, ^cso that you will love one another.

The Hatred of the World

18 ^d“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 ^eIf you wereof the world, the world would love you as its own; but because ^fyou are not of the world,but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the wordthat I said to you: ^g‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, ^htheywill also persecute you. ⁱIf they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21 But ^jall thesethings they will do to you ^kon account of my name, ^lbecause they do not know him whosent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, ^mthey would not have been guilty ofsin,^{Greek they would not have sin; also verse 24}" href="https://www.esv.org/John+15/#f2-">2 but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 ⁿWhoever hates me hates my Fatheralso. 24 ^oIf I had not done among them the works that no one else did, ^mthey would not beguilty of sin, but now they have ^pseen and hated both me and my Father. 25 But ^qthe wordthat is written in their Law must be fulfilled: ^r‘They hated me without a cause.’

26 “But ^swhen the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit oftruth, who proceeds from the Father, ^the will bear witness about me. 27 And ^uyou also willbear witness, ^vbecause you have been with me ^wfrom the beginning.

16 “I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. 2 ^xThey will putyou out of the synagogues. Indeed, ^ythe hour is coming when ^zwhoever kills youwill think he is offering service to God. 3 And they will do these things ^abecause they havenot known the Father, nor me. 4 But ^bI have said these things to you, that when ^ctheirhour comes you may remember that I told them to you.

John 14 - From Orphans to Doing Greater Works Than Jesus?

⁷ If you had known me, you would have known my Father also.^[d] From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

⁸ Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.”⁹ Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? ¹⁰ Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. ¹¹ Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.

¹² “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. ¹³ Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. ¹⁴ If you ask me^[e] anything in my name, I will do it.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

¹⁵ “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. ¹⁶ And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper,^[f] to be with you forever, ¹⁷ even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be^[g] in you.

¹⁸ “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. ¹⁹ Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. ²⁰ In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. ²¹ Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” ²² Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” ²³ Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. ²⁴ Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me.

²⁵ “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. ²⁶ But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. ²⁷ Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. ²⁸ You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. ²⁹ And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. ³⁰ I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me, ³¹ but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.

A New Command: Love One Another

A New Commandment

31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, ⁿ“Now is the Son of Man glorified, and ^oGod isglorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, ^pGod will also glorify him in himself, and^qglorify him at once. 33 Little children, ^ryet a little while I am with you. You will seek me,and just ^sas I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannotcome.’ 34 ^tA new commandment ^uI give to you, ^vthat you love one another: ^wjust as I haveloved you, you also are to love one another. 35 ^xBy this all people will know that you are mydisciples, if you have love for one another.”

Peter Denies Jesus

15 ^cSimon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Since that disciple wasknown to the high priest, he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest,16 ^dbut Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the highpriest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, and broughtPeter in. 17 ^eThe servant girl at the door said to Peter, “You also are not one of this man'sdisciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.” 18 Now the servants^{Or bondservants; also verse 26}" href="https://www.esv.org/John+18/#f5-">5 and officers had made acharcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves.^fPeter also was with them, standing and warming himself.

 

Peter Denies Jesus Again

25 ^mNow Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “Youalso are not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” 26 One of theservants of the high priest, a relative of ⁿthe man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “DidI not see you ^oin the garden with him?” 27 Peter again denied it, and ^pat once a roostercrowed.

15 When they had ^ufinished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ^v“Simon, ^wson ofJohn, ^xdo you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I loveyou.” He said to him, “Feed ^ymy lambs.” 16 He said to him a second time, “Simon, son ofJohn, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said tohim, ^z“Tend ^ymy sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you loveme?” Peter was grieved because he said to him ^athe third time, “Do you love me?” and hesaid to him, “Lord, ^byou know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him,“Feed ^cmy sheep. 18 ^dTruly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, ^eyou used to dressyourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out yourhands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” 19 (This hesaid to show ^fby what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said tohim, ^g“Follow me.”

Jesus and Judas

One of You Will Betray Me

Jesus said to him, ⁱ“Whatyou are going to do, do quickly.” 28 Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him.29 Some thought that, ^jbecause Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy whatwe need ^kfor the feast,” or that he should ^lgive something to the poor. 30 So, afterreceiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. ^mAnd it was night.

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

John 13 - Washing the Feet

Jesus Washes the Disciples' Feet

13 Now ⁿbefore ^othe Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that ^phis hour hadcome ^qto depart out of this world to the Father, ^rhaving loved ^shis own whowere in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 During supper, when ^tthe devil had alreadyput it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him, 3 Jesus, knowing ^uthatthe Father had given all things into his hands, and that ^vhe had come from God and ^wwasgoing back to God, 4 rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking atowel, ^xtied it around his waist. 5 Then he ^ypoured water into a basin and began to washthe disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6 Hecame to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” 7 ^zJesus answeredhim, “What I am doing ^ayou do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.”8 ^bPeter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, ^c“If I do notwash you, you have no share with me.” 9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet onlybut also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does notneed to wash, ^dexcept for his feet,¹ but is completely clean. 12 When he had washed their feet and ^hput on his outer garments and resumed hisplace, he said to them, ⁱ“Do you understand what I have done to you? 13 ^jYou call me^kTeacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, havewashed your feet, ^lyou also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 For I have given you anexample, ^mthat you also should do just as I have done to you. 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, ⁿaservant^{Or bondservant, or slave (for the contextual rendering of the Greek word doulos, see Preface)}" href="https://www.esv.org/John+13/#f3-">3 is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who senthim. 17 If you know these things, ^oblessed are you if you do them.

John 12 - The Hour Has Come to Rise

Some Greeks Seek Jesus

20 Now ^eamong those who went up to worship at the feast were some ^fGreeks. 21 Sothese came to ^gPhilip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we wish tosee Jesus.” 22 Philip went and told ^hAndrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus.23 And Jesus answered them, ⁱ“The hour has come ^jfor the Son of Man to be glorified.24 Truly, truly, I say to you, ^kunless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, itremains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 ^lWhoever loves his life loses it, and^mwhoever ⁿhates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If anyone serves me,he must ^ofollow me; and ^pwhere I am, there will my servant be also. ^qIf anyone serves me,^rthe Father will honor him.

The Son of Man Must Be Lifted Up

27 ^s“Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, ^tsave me from ^uthis hour’?But ^vfor this purpose I have come to ^uthis hour. 28 Father, glorify your name.” Then ^wavoice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” 29 The crowd thatstood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, ^x“An angel has spoken tohim.” 30 Jesus answered, ^y“This voice has come for your sake, not mine. 31 ^zNow is thejudgment of this world; now will ^athe ruler of this world ^bbe cast out. 32 And I, ^cwhen Iam lifted up from the earth, ^dwill draw ^eall people to myself.” 33 He said this ^fto show bywhat kind of death he was going to die. 34 So the crowd answered him, “We have heardfrom the Law that ^gthe Christ remains forever. How can you say that ^hthe Son of Manmust be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?” 35 So Jesus said to them, ⁱ“The light is amongyou ^jfor a little while longer. ^kWalk while you have the light, lest darkness ^lovertake you.^mThe one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you havethe light, believe in the light, that you may become ⁿsons of light.”

The Unbelief of the People

When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them. 37 Thoughhe had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him, 38 ^oso that theword spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

^p“Lord, who has believed what he heard from us,

and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”

39 Therefore they ^qcould not believe. For again Isaiah said,

40  ^r“He has blinded their eyes

and ^shardened their heart,

lest they see with their eyes,

and understand with their heart, and turn,

and I would heal them.”

41 Isaiah said these things because ^the saw his glory and ^uspoke of him. 42 Nevertheless,^vmany even of the authorities believed in him, but ^wfor fear of the Pharisees they did not^xconfess it, so that they would not be ^xput out of the synagogue; 43 ^yfor they loved theglory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.

Jesus Came to Save the World

44 And Jesus cried out and said, ^z“Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but ^ainhim who sent me. 45 And ^bwhoever ^csees me sees him who sent me. 46 ^dI have come intothe world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. 47 If anyone^ehears my words and does not keep them, ^fI do not judge him; for ^gI did not come to judgethe world but to save the world. 48 ^hThe one who rejects me and does not receive mywords has a judge; ⁱthe word that I have spoken will judge him ^jon the last day. 49 For ^kIhave not spoken on my own authority, but the Father ^lwho sent me has himself given me^ma commandment—what to say and what to speak. 50 And I know that his commandmentis eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me.”
